I’ve been watching these dogs— Ellie and Mabel— since Monday afternoon and I changed my bedtime habits for them since they’re what I affectionately call “old people dogs.” Although one of the dogs is about 12, the other one is less than a year old. However, their people are at the age where going to bed at 9:30pm is a perfectly acceptable pattern and waking up at 4am on some days is also normal.
Although I will not wake up at 4am unless the house is on fire or someone is actively vomiting, I can go to bed and put the dogs to bed at 9:30 or 10pm, no problem. The first night I thought, I can’t sleep for 10 hours, so now I have to get up at 6am.
So I did, starting on Tuesday morning… and I decided we would go on walks. By the second morning I realized the 12-year-old is 12 and can’t do walks much anymore and she was very shook to be left alone this morning, but she’s more thankful for it at the end of today.
Dogs are funny in that they teach you how out of shape and out of habits you are just by going on a simple walk. So I figured when I get back home at the end of next week I will have walked every morning for almost 2 weeks and need to keep that habit if I want to continue to live a productive life.
So… that’s how habits are started I guess. We’ll see if this continues.
