In the absence of social media, I have a lot more random thoughts.
Some of these thoughts stay with me and I ruminate on them. Others just float in and out of my head as fast as a leaf in high winds.
One of the thoughts that I ruminated on was a silly idea. I’m not even sure what brought it up. Maybe one of the books I read or listened to, or maybe just the fact that my hands and skin gets so sensitive to water when it gets below 65 degrees… but the idea is this:
Water— in all its forms— always wins.
It’s a silly thought. But then I started to notice that it may not be completely silly.
All of our body washes, shampoos, laundry detergents, and cleaning supplies use water or have water as one of the first ingredients (if not the very first ingredient). All of our favorite foods and (naturally) drinks have water in them.
Water purifies. Water cleanses. Water gives life.
On the darker side, water kills, wounds, and eats away.
We could go into the weeds of chemicals that are put in the water, but I’m not here to start arguments. Even without chemicals, water will soften the integrity of a plastic bowl if left in there for long periods of time. Water will rust metal. If not today or tomorrow, it WILL rust eventually. Water corrodes rock, carves its own path, takes whatever is in its way and either moves it or wears it down.
Water puts out fires, rehydrates dried vegetation, reinvigorates the thirsty.
Water ALWAYS wins.
Why am I talking about this? Because Jesus said— in multiple areas in the Gospels— that He was the water that anyone could come to drink from. Jesus knew that to compare Himself to water is to compare Himself to not only something that gives life, but also always wins.
It’s just amazing to me that Jesus is so good and so intentional and so loving and so open and so forgiving. I want to be more like Him everyday and I KNOW I need that everlasting, always-winning water more than air. Even more than life itself.
So… these are the thoughts I’ve ruminated on a lot over the past few weeks. I really like not having social media.
