I decided to do my Bloganuary blog in the morning instead of at the end of the day like I normally do my blog entries since the writing prompt just showed up in my inbox and I woke up earlier than I absolutely needed to
Bloganuary Prompt:
What is the earliest memory you have?
The funny thing about the mind— and especially my mind— is that I rarely remember events, but I’ll remember one or two seconds from an event and then have no recollection of when in my life that memory is from or what I was doing.
I remember a lot of things from when I was small.
– mini golfing with my dad and uncle (at least one of them) on Jekyll Island
– learning to swim in a hotel pool with my dad
– a giant hole in the wall in the bathroom because work was being done on it
Those are things I still have memory of all these years later.
Fun fact: I have almost as much of an irrational fear of large holes in the wall as I do of cockroaches. Pretty sure it’s because of that hole in the bathroom wall when I was little… my mom even mentioned that she’s noticed I have issues with that sometimes.
I guess the difference between the holes and cockroaches is that I will leave a building (or desperately want to) if I see even one cockroach. At least with holes in the wall, my logical mind can overcome the weird fear and just do whatever it is I’m doing there.
But I definitely have a “thing” about holes in the wall.
So this turned into a therapy session more than a blog about my earliest memories. But I remember very few of them and what I do remember of those events are limited to a 1-2 second period of time that my mind determined was the best part of that event to hold onto.
Even if it was just flailing in the water or grabbing my golf ball out of the cold water on Jekyll Island or trying to use the bathroom and imagining roaches coming out and skittering up my legs…
Maybe that’s why I have a fear of holes in the wall… it’s just the bug factor.
