Eight Month Check-In

My niece, youngest nephew and I at the older nephews’ soccer games last weekend.

Yesterday I mentioned that I would be writing a blog ahead of time, so now I’m a time-traveler and I’m talking to you from the future. πŸ˜‰

Yesterday at the “Monday” client, the wife– who is a very dear friend– said that she could tell since I left social media that I have become more confident and more sure of who I am.

I had been thinking about that as well, but I wondered if it was just me or if I was thinking into a vacuum. Since literally all of my friends are still very much involved on social media to varying degrees and for varying reasons, I’m the only one that’s really going through not being on social media. Even my mom is still on social media, though she is pretty good about only being on during certain times of the day.

My favorite thing to do when I’m not looking at my phone (since I do that a lot less in public unless people are actively texting me) is watch how often other people pull out their phones. Some people never get off, and others put it away only to pull it out again. Still others will be in the middle of a conversation with their friends and pull it out because they just need that shot of dopamine and their friends must not be providing it, I guess.

That last part is mostly a joke, but I have witnessed people pull their phones out in the middle of conversations for seemingly no other reason than to look at it.

I’ve even gotten to the part in my life where I don’t want my phone to be close to my body for long periods of time because I’m pretty sure the radiation is worse than we’re all being led to believe… but that’s probably just the “conspiracy” part of my brain. (Better to be safe than sorry; I will still try very hard not to put my phone in my pocket all that often if I can avoid it)

But that’s an aside. All of that is to say, now that I have a laptop, I do spend significantly less time on my phone altogether since most of what I want to do can be done better on a larger screen like a laptop.

For instance, writing. Since I mentioned it the other day, I’ve written almost 8,000 words in the story I started rewriting. I’ve already introduced all of the important characters and gotten the story moving in a way that I didn’t even know it was going.

So if you text me and my phone happens to be across the room at the time… I apologize, but you’re going to have to wait until I get up to get it. πŸ˜›

Also, thanks to that friend for pointing out how much I’ve grown over the last eight months. It’s very helpful and I really appreciate it. πŸ™‚
