Last night, my best friend Rachel and I drove just over 3 hours to Hutchinson, Kansas, for Smallville Con to sell her books.
After one day of sales, connections, and generally goofing off, I have determined that the best part about any type of pop culture convention is the people.
Have also decided I really like openly selling Christian things because if I “Jesus Juke” someone, it’s on-brand.
Earlier this week, Rachel gave me a blank, unlined journal from a Kansas City-local bookstore. I decided the best place to hold onto something like that is in my purse. So I got used to the extra weight in my purse all week and had a thought:
What if I use the journal to ask people leading yet simple questions?

Today, the question was, “What do you like to do for fun?” I had a few people write in their own hand, but I would mostly just ask and then engage them with their answer before I wrote it down.
I got a page and a half of answers, but we didn’t have a ton of people stop at the booth and neither me nor Rachel are overly pushy… even though we are very engaging once they do show up. 😉
My favorite answer today was a gentleman who is also a cop who said he’s gotten into bee-keeping because it’s so cathartic. I LOVE THAT. Those are the types of responses and engagement I want.
Another guy later on simply said, “I don’t know, I just like learning new things.”
A young girl that stopped by said she loves to skate for fun and that was my most surprising answer, since I didn’t know roller-skating was making a comeback.
I asked my bestest friend for some ideas for more questions in the future, and I’m going to use a variation of one of them tomorrow, with a fun follow-up question:
”If you could have any fantasy animal for a pet, what would it be? What would you name it?”
Overall, this is turning out to be a fun experience, and it’s helping me remember to pay attention to the people around me more.
