Priority: A Singular Purpose

A candid shot of the family at my mom’s birthday party

Within the last week or so, I learned that the word “priority” was always meant to be a singular word. Because, as the post I read put it, “back when it became a word, there could only be one most important thing at a time.”

With social media and just the simple fact that most words have become plural even when they really shouldn’t be, we have made “priority” a word that can become plural. And with that was the fact that we suddenly found ourselves with more than one “most important thing” in our lives at a time.

I don’t know what you know about humanity, but I’ve learned there is no real and sustainable way for us to focus on more than one important thing at a time. And that is especially true for me.

And I think that’s why the Lord is pleased with the fact that I am doing at least one of the things on my new schedule on a consistent basis. Working out has been something I’ve known I should have been doing for a long time, but I would always excuse myself out of doing it at one point or another.

Now that it has been VERY SPECIFICALLY directed by the Lord (sometimes on a morning by morning basis), it feels more like “priority” than it did before. And I believe that once I have that habit down, we will move onto the next thing.

Naturally, you would assume that working out might take a backseat once I start working on the next thing, but that’s why it’s “until it’s a habit.” If I wake up one morning and don’t work out and it feels extremely strange that I didn’t, I know I have all day to rectify that, but the first time I don’t, THAT’S when we start over.

Right now, “priority one” for me is simply: Building Good Habits.

So the Lord started me with the thing that is the most difficult and we’re working down to the easiest one.

Until then, I’m just trying to make sure I get through 100 burpees tomorrow morning…

  1. Proud of you, fren. And that’s a little convicting about it being a singular word…
