Today is day 3 of a 5-day trip I felt the Lord lead me to plan for my two best friends and me. I think I had originally called it our “besties trip”, and it is… but I’m realizing it’s more than that.
It’s a Sabbath trip.
Aside from the initial planning on all our parts, very little work has been done otherwise and we have simply just gone with the flow the whole weekend.
Especially because the weather didn’t really cooperate the way I wanted it to…

On our drive across Kansas and Colorado, we had cloudy conditions almost the entire way. I was really disappointed because Rachel (pictured at the top from behind) had never seen the mountains from a distance before and I know for me, back in November, that was a really cool experience.
In fact, it’s been cloudy or hazy nearly the entire time. Although… it has been super fun when my other best friend Esther and I will see Pikes Peak come out from behind a cloud and yell out, “Look!” And Rachel gets to see it as if for the first time.
“Guys! There’s a giant rock in the sky!” She’s taken to yelling out at random times when we see the majesty of the mountains.
Today, we even got to go halfway up the mountain! (We did another super fun thing too, but I’ll talk about that at a later time)

As anybody may have guessed from some of my previous blogs about the mountains and Pikes Peak… I love the mountains.
Not nearly as much as Esther, but I certainly love them a lot and have a lot of good memories tied to Pikes Peak specifically. When we on a whim decided to replace doing something else with climbing Pikes Peak, I didn’t even consider it for a second. I was hoping we could get all the way to the top to get some gorgeous views as far as possible…
But then the weather happened…

Thankfully I called ahead to see how much of the highway would be open before we left, so I knew we would only get through 13 of the 19 drivable miles, but man, was it breathtaking.
When we reached Glen Cove Inn at 11,450 feet above sea level, I started to really experience altitude sickness, and since as you can see from a couple of those pictures, we could see the storm rolling in, I was glad we would be turning around and driving back down in altitude, even if it was just less than 4,000 feet down. Of course, we had to drive through snow and just about everyone was leaving and my lowest gear was lower than most other people’s, we were topping out at 20 mph in a 25-30 mph zone usually. A lot of pulling over to let the faster people pass had to be done, but I was more glad to not have them behind me in case the road also got to be bad too.
Thankfully, the road never did go bad. The whole thing was probably one of the best experiences of my life and I’m hoping that next time, I can make it all the way to the top when the weather allows for super clear views…
As it stands, that was one of the best Sabbath experiences I’ve ever had with my two best friends and I am 100% glad the Lord allowed me to plan this trip and bring my friends along for the ride.

** There will be another post about some of the other things I’ve been learning and experiencing… as well as a post for my dad’s birthday tomorrow! This was just something I really wanted to share first. 🙂
