Always On The Clock (A Longer Blog Than Usual)

At my oldest nephew’s birthday party the other night

I’ve been trying to write this blog for days, but something kept stopping me.
– Life
– Lack of motivation
– Not having a good title
– Going in the wrong direction

The last one might surprise you since my tagline for this blog is literally living life without the socials, and that’s anything that’s happened from August 29 to today. But here’s a fun fact:

This blog isn’t about me.

Weird flex, I know. How can a blog about my life not be about me? All I’ve ever written about is myself and I don’t even use people’s names when I talk about them!

But I finally had the realization that although this blog is about what I’m learning, it’s not about me.

This blog is about the Lord’s work in me and how I’m using it to tell people about His goodness in my life.

That’s a HUGE responsibility, but not one that is uncommon for any other day as a Believer (or a Christian, if you’ve never heard Christians call themselves “Believers”… my roommate said “One of us” when talking about someone earlier without saying that person was a Christian and that sounded super strange so I’ll refrain from that until needed).

As Believers, we’re called to be… well, a lot of things. Fully human, reproducers of Jesus, light, salt, “all things to all people so that we might save some“, priests, prophets, evangelists, teachers… you get it.

Basically, we’re always on the clock. We’re always working.

If we aren’t constantly asking ourselves how we can advance the Kingdom of God on the earth, are we really working all the time?

The thing about when you’re at work “on the clock” is that you’re not constantly doing something. There are lulls and times to talk and times to have holiday parties and whatever else… but by and large, if you’re at work, you’re representing your company and in essence to anyone who doesn’t work there, you’re working.

It’s the same thing with the Kingdom of God and being a Believer. You’re always on the clock, but of course there are times to rest and trust me when I say, I am all about resting. Do not work yourself to death and then blame me, because even I don’t work that hard.

Even the Lord took a day off when He created the universe. Heck, even Jesus had times of rest, but when someone needed Him or asked for Him, He made Himself available.

I think sometimes we forget that all of life is a balance. My mom’s favorite thing to remind me of is “everything in moderation.” We expect it to be “always busy” or “always rest” and even treat our week like that. “The week is for working and getting the things done that can’t be done during the weekend and then Saturday is for chores and then I’ll take Sunday off and rest.”

I do it too. Sunday is my favorite day to take off and anytime I go through a season where I don’t have Sundays off (I’m currently in that season), I will lament every single week that I don’t have Sundays off. It’s not like there aren’t six other days in the week, but Sunday is my day… and that’s a bit selfish of me and I’ve had to really deal with my selfishness a lot lately.

First The Directive and now with the days I get off.

But the Lord reminded me that as soon as I gave my life to Him for the first time (and every time I’ve recommitted or promised Him that I haven’t changed my mind), my life is now His to use. I get to rest because that’s very Biblical, of course, but this life is not about me, just like this blog isn’t about me.

It’s about Him working through me so that other people can either come to know Him or come to know Him more closely.

So take some time to rest if you’re feeling weary, especially during this holiday season, but remember to still make yourself available to God and what He can do through you even during your resting phase. 🙂

I hope and pray this blog helped you this evening and that you are drawn closer to God because of it. And if not… well I know the seeds were sown. 😉

  2. Very good word! As I’m trying to organize/unbox my life right now (since we moved, as you know. . .), I need to remember to rest as well.
