Reading Changed My Life

Bloganuary Writing Prompt:
Has a book changed your life?

I’m going to ignore the obvious cop-out answer of “duh, the Bible” and answer this question about a different book. Or series of books because just one didn’t change my life so much as having them all at once did.

If you’ve talked to me at all for more than three and a half minutes, you may have heard me talk about a man that used to be my favorite author, Ted Dekker.

His series of books, called The Circle Series, originally started as a trilogy consisting of the books Black, Red, and White. This trilogy changed my life in so many ways.

— I looked at God and my relationship with Him differently
— I fell in love with book characters for the first time that I can remember
— This story made me want to become a writer
— This is a story I remember well because not only did I read it, but I gave my mom an almost chapter-by-chapter synopsis
— I still base all protagonists in other books I read off the protagonist from this series
— I ended up finding a large group of friends through Ted Dekker’s later writings and am still in contact with a few of them today

Ted Dekker himself kind of went a little weird with his theology more recently and I don’t care as much for his more recent writings, but I will tell anyone who will listen (and is willing to read at least the original trilogy) how much I love The Circle Series.

And yes, I do hate on the add-on of the fourth book, Green (which changed it from The Circle Trilogy to The Circle Series), but I just can’t bring myself to pretend the fourth book doesn’t exist. I’m still working on letting people read it and be upset with me about the ending, but… that’s up to them.

Did that sound biased? I’m really not a fan of the fourth book.

There is one friend I’ll probably let read it that would be willing to, but we’ll see where she is once she’s finished the first three (she just finished Black the other day).

So to answer the question has a book changed your life?
The answer is yes. In so many ways.

Have you ever read a book that changed your life? What is it called? Maybe I’ll look it up! 🙂

FYI the entire Circle series omnibus is on sale on Kindle for like $2.99 today… so I definitely went ahead and picked it up. Meanwhile… *pets her graphic novel editions that were her Christmas gift*

Ooh ooh, ANGEL FALL by Coleman Luck is singlehandedly responsible for turning me into the writer I am today. (The original is out of print; an author’s expanded edition is currently available on Amazon I believe.) That was the first Christian fiction book I ever read where I felt like I came away knowing God better. It opened my eyes to what Christian fiction can and should be–brilliant and earth-shattering and tragic and not confined to any “safe” genre. I think I shoved my signed copy in your face… or was it other-bestie? One of you has it…

    2. Also, you won’t regret having read all four if you do. The ending in the omnibus is different than the original… more closure. So… there’s that.

  2. I have three books that changed my life. The first was “The Bears and I” from back when I was about 13. . . it’s the true story about a young man who rears three orphaned bear cubs in British Columbia and then releases them into the wild. It really opened up my mind and challenged me to broaden my horizens. I guess it was the first book that allowed me to “see” beyond my tiny bubble.
The second was “Surprised by the Spirit” by Jack Deere. It really opened up my heart to the things of the Spirit, even though I was Spirit-filled.
The third was “Your God is too Safe”, by Mark Buchanan. So good, and I highly recommend. I think they’re all available on Amazon.
