Usually when someone takes their birthday off, they sleep in.
A common joke in our family is that sleep is for the weak, so I woke up at 6:30 this morning to go out to breakfast with my bestest friend.
It’s also common when someone takes their birthday off that they do as little as possible and they definitely don’t go to the DMV to get their license renewed.
However, my license expired today so I carved time into my day to sit at the DMV and get my license renewed.
And last I checked, it’s pretty common when someone makes a plan with their family that they actually remember to show up.
Definitely forgot to do that. In my defense, I was writing for the first time in weeks and completely forgot to pay attention to the time.
My mom got me a new laptop and a gamer keyboard (I like the “clackity-clackity”), so I’ve been putting them to good use already. In fact, I’ve written over 2,500 words since I started right around noon.
I said all of that to say… as you get older, do whatever you want on your birthday.
Want to have a party? Great! Throw the best dang party you can.
Want to do nothing and see no one? Fantastic. Go ahead and do that.
Want to go to work because what else are you going to do when you need to make money?… Ok, then. Not my style, but I understand the need for money, obviously.
It’s also ok to remember that birthdays might be a day, but you have a life. And so do all your friends. It’s ok to do things slowly over the course of a week or spread them all out over a whole month even.
One of my friends gave me her presents over two weeks ago; my roommate bought me a bookshelf, put it together and installed it in my room the last time I was dog-sitting; my family did my brother’s and my celebrations yesterday because it was easier to have the whole family together after church than to try to plan something in the middle of the week. I treated myself last week to a massage and over the weekend I got a pedicure.
Basically, my birthday has been going on since April 15, and I use my birthday time as a time to treat myself to things I don’t normally get. Presents, massages, pedicures, and cake are some of the things I don’t get normally, so why not get them whenever I can around my birthday?
Just remember to enjoy your life and do what you want for your birthday “season”. Sometimes people get so caught up in the semantics of doing things a certain way that they forget to enjoy the life that they have.
So I definitely just wanted to remind you to live a good life and live it well. 🙂
